There were two Asian winners at the 81st Annual Academy Awards, both from Japan.

First up, filmmaker Kunio Kato won Best Animated Short Film for La Maison En Petits Cubes. After thanking everyone from the Academy to his pencil, listen to the hilarious way he ends his acceptance speech….

Further into the evening, director Yojiro Takita’s Departures won for Best Foreign Language film in what many are calling an upset victory. Departures is about an unemployed cellist who finds work preparing corpses for cremation.

Ryoko Hirosue (who played the role of the cellist’s wife), looked lovely and chic on the red carpet wearing a pale pink Valentino gown and accessories by Jimmy Choo.
